Exploring Beauty Attitudes

Approximately 60 percent of women say personal appearance is important to them, ranking it above career and friends, according to a recently published study by BuzzBack Market Research entitled Exploring Beauty: Her Self Image, Attitudes & Beliefs. While personal appearance ranked high, women recognized other life circumstances as more important, including health, marriage and faith.
Through its proprietary eCollage tool, the study examined women’s innermost thoughts on beauty.

Respondents were asked to create collages that revealed emotions and introspective attitudes about beauty and appearance. Women selected from over one hundred images and background colors to depict how they feel about their personal appearance on an average day.

The study revealed that about 85 percent of respondents would like to change something about their appearance.  Weight was the primary focus, but the women surveyed also showed concern over moisturized skin and hair condition.

According to the study, the importance of functional benefits such as evening skin tone (68 percent), moisturizing (62 percent), and availability in a variety of shades and colors (60 percent) is overshadowed by the importance of more practical properties such as ease of application (83 percent) and removal (70 percent.)

The three cosmetic products that respondents, on average, listed as “must haves” are body or facial care product, hair care product and color and lip protection.

Nearly one-third of respondents use color cosmetics every day, while about one-third apply makeup between 3-6 times a week. The study found that Hispanics apply makeup more frequently than African Americans and Caucasians, and respondents with household incomes at or above $60k apply makeup more frequently than lower income brackets.
